The story of Mumei

I’v started to search for a mix between calligraphy and abstract faces back in 2014. Something about the brutal but mastered brushstroke. Something pure, ink on paper. As always, I’ve wanted to work with expressive faces, the eyes. Then, along all these years I’ve tried so many things and perfected my capacity to draw spontaneous but controlled curves and shapes. And then one day I find the answer : the missing piece was the japanese inspiration.

I love all those ancients cultures with the way they draw allegoric figure and hieroglyph. I can fell something mystic.
Moreover, I wanted to made composition where you can see differents possibilities and feel an emotion.
All those faces, who are they? Why can I feel their presence?

That’s why I’ve chosen the name Mumei (無名) which means « nameless » in Japanese. Are we really incarnated without a name?

My technique here is very simple: no preparatory sketch, just clear my mind and let my hand do. It has to be unconscious and spontaneous. So if the curve is bad, I redo everything again and again till I’m satisfied. Indian ink on watercolor paper with a calligraphic brush. And sometime I like to create pattern or more complex composition with my computer, often symmetrical, like decorative ancients cultures art. Like it was some kind of discovered archeology from a lost civilization.
Somewhere between calligraphy and illustration.

ps:
I’ve discovered this name in the anime « Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress » by Wit Studio. This character can become very powerful because of the poison that she frees in her body, but only for a very short period of time because if the poison reached the brain she will die.
